A multi-cloud datacenter jointly established by VMware and Far EasTone Telecom for Foxconn (Hon Hai Technology) at its headquarters in New Taipei has become operational since June. According to Barry Chen, general manager of VMware Taiwan, the cooperation can help the EMS provider with accelerating its digital transformation.

This is Foxconn's first datacenter featuring a hybrid multi-cloud architecture, Chen said, and it will assist Foxconn with data management standardization, production automation and business globalization. Chen disclosed that both parties had discussed the project for over one year, touching on diverse issues to be addressed, such as ESG carbon reduction, information security and enterprise transformation.

The datacenter uses the VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) infrastructure, which includes a virtualization platform, virtual network, virtual storage and related monitoring and management solutions, Chen said, revealing that almost all VMware's product lines are adopted for the datacenter so as to ensure uninterrupted operations at the EMS and support its future business innovations.

Chen noted that as the industry's most advanced hybrid cloud platform, VCF is based on software-defined data center (SDDC), which can be connected with major public cloud platforms, allowing enterprises to maintain data controllability while giving its branches sufficient authority to access the data resources needed. Enterprises can therefore significantly improve their efficiency and flexibility in data management, he added.

Chen indicated that VMware Taiwan has seen 70-80% of its revenues contributed by clients in the banking and high-tech manufacturing sectors as well as public organizations including government units, schools and hospitals.

He also revealed that VMware has partnered with major public cloud players such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google and Alibaba, providing enterprises with multiple options.

IDC statistics show that Taiwan's public cloud service market had an annual growth rate of 33.6% reaching US$1.217 billion in 2021. IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) garnered 39.8% of the market, while SaaS (Software as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service) accounted for 52.3% and 7.9%, respectively. The top-5 vendors in the market were AWS, Azure, Google, Trend Micro and Saleforces.com.
