The semiconductor equipment market reached US$10.36 billion in the first quarter of 2010, growing 43% from US$7.24 billion in the prior quarter, according to VLSI Research. The figure jumped 188% from 2009, when the economic recession hit.
In terms of semiconductor equipment sales, Applied Materials continued to lead the market, said VLSI Research. Sales of its IC manufacturing equipment and related services were US$1.74 billion, up 43% on quarter and 137% on year.
Teradyne posted the strongest on-quarter growth among the top-10 suppliers in the first quarter, driven by strong demand of its SoC test systems, VLSI Research noted. Tokyo Electron, Nikon and Lam Research also enjoyed exceptional growth sequentially in the quarter.
VLSI Research reiterated its outlook for full-year 2010, expecting sales to rise 95.8% to US$47.6 billion.
