India reduces import customs duty on handset components, benefiting Apple and Samsung

The Finance Ministry of India notified on January 30 that import duties on certain mobile phone parts, such as battery cover, front cover, antenna, SIM socket, screws, conductive cloth, and LCD conductive foam, were reduced from 15% to 10%. Some believe the move will benefit manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung.

Wistron signs MoU to make notebooks in India after iPhone business sale

Taiwan-based Wistron signed an MoU with the government of Karnataka, planning to invest INR15 billion (US$180.7 million) to set up a notebook manufacturing facility, generating 3,000 jobs in the state. Wistron said the investment was for maintenance capacity expansion.

Samsung reclaims top position in smartphone market in India, Apple leads in smartphone revenue

According to Counterpoint, 152 million smartphones were shipped to India in 2023, about the same level as the previous year. Samsung held first place, followed by Vivo and Xiaomi for the full year. Regarding the fourth quarter, Xiaomi led the market with an 18.3% share, followed by Vivo's 17.3%. Notably, iPhone shipments exceeded 10 million units due to strong demand for its latest and previous models, securing the top spot in smartphone revenue in 2023.

Apple breaks sales record in India

Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the latest earnings call that Apple continued to see strong double-digit growth in many emerging markets, with all-time records in Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland, and Turkey, and December quarter records in India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Chile.
