Applied Materials and the Institute of Microelectronics (IME), a research institute under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), have officially opened the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Packaging at Singapore's Science Park II.

Robert Tsao, honorary chairman of United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), said recently in a TV interview that he has given up his Taiwan citizenship. Disappointment in the domestic judicial system is the major reason why Tsao decided to become a Singaporean.

Micron Technology has acquired Canon's interest in Tech Semiconductor Singapore for about US$121 million, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Micron also seems to be taking the lead in its joint venture with Intel.

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Friday said it swung to a first-quarter net loss on lower sales and margins, and that it remains difficult to tell when the market will bottom despite signs of improving conditions. The Singapore-based chip foundry reported a net loss of US$114.2 million on revenues of US$243.9 million for the three months ended March 31, its third consecutive quarterly loss. But the figure was better than its average forecast.
