Digitimes Research: Taiwan 4Q12 notebook ODM shipments up on quarter, down on year

Taiwan-based ODMs shipped 43.69 million notebooks in fourth-quarter 2012, increasing 2.5% sequentially but decreasing 3.0% on year, with their global market share reaching 90.1%, according to Digitimes Research's latest findings.

Nvidia unveiled a pilot tablet based on its new Tegra 4 processor and Microsoft's Windows RT operating system at CES 2013, and since the device is already operating smoothly, Nvidia will have a chance of becoming the CPU supplier for next-generation Surface tablets or Windows RT-based tablets from other IT players, according to Digitimes Research senior analyst Eric Lin.

In 2012, Panasonic's LED lighting accounted for 10% of the global market. The firm has been expanding product lines and expects to obtain a 37.5% share in Japan in 2013. Panasonic has been expanding in other markets such as China and Europe as the Japan market is likely to become saturated in a few years. The firm predicts revenues from China and Europe will account for 76.3% of total overseas revenues in 2015.

Due to fluctuating demand in Europe, China-based solar module firms Yingli, Suntech and Trina Solar saw shipments in third-quarter 2012 decrease by 16.9%, 10%, and 9% respectively. Jinko Solar, on the other hand, benefitted from domestic demand, and saw total shipments increase by 20% in the same period. Yingli's accumulated shipments in the first three quarters of 2012 reached 1.55GW and expects total shipments in 2012 to exceed 2GW, representing growth compared to 2011.

China-based panel maker BOE recently signed an investment agreement with the Chongqing Municipal Government to jointly invest CNY$32.8 billion (US$5.26 billion) in constructing a new 8.5G line within the western China municipality. The line is expected to begin construction no later than the third quarter of 2013 and is likely to be completed by the second quarter of 2015.
