Rohm Semiconductor has announced the acquisition of the assets of Solar Frontier's former Kunitomi plant in Japan. The plant will be operated by Lapis Semiconductor, a Rohm group company, as its Miyazaki Plant No. 2.

The Miyazaki Plant No. 2 will be Rohm's main manufacturing base for silicon carbide (SiC) power devices, and it is scheduled to open in 2024.

In July 2023, Rohm and Solar Frontier reached an agreement for the transfer of the factory site, which has a total floor area of 230,000 square meters on a land site of 400,000 square meters.

In pursuit of carbon neutrality and environmental impact reduction, technological advancements such as electrification are being implemented in the automotive and industrial equipment sectors. As a consequence, there is a surge in demand, particularly for analog and power semiconductors, according to Rohm. "The ROHM Group intends to expand its production capacity continuously, particularly for SiC power devices, and ensure a stable supply to ROHM's customers."
