Digitimes Research: South Korea-based ETRI developing transparent display technologies

South Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has been developing guest-host LCD and polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), two new transparent display technologies based on doping red, green, blue and black dyestuff, and expects to finish development in February 2016, according to Digitimes Research.

Transparent display technologies include OLED, TFT-LCD, guest-host LCD, PDLC and electro chromic, and Samsung Display and LG Display have been developing OLED transparent display panels, Digitimes Research indicated. While guest-host LCD and PDLC are superior to electro chromic but inferior to OLED in color rendering performance, the two technologies consume less power and have longer service lives than electro chromic and OLED.

Global market value for transparent displays will grow from US$1 billion in 2016 to US$2.2 billion in 2019 and further to US$2.7 billion in 2020, Digitimes Research cited ETRI as indicating.

ETRI has obtained several patents concerning the chemical structure of dyestuff, manufacturing processes and evaluating methods related to guest-host LCD and PDLC and will transfer them to South Korea-based panel makers after February 2016.
