PenPower Technology, a leading developer and provider of software recognition technologies and solutions in Taiwan, on November 30 debuted the first three products of the FaceMetrix series, the company’s facial-recognition software technology.
PenPower has offered various security-software products based on voiceprint, handwriting and OCR (optical character recognition) technologies, according to company chairman Yih-tay Tsai. The three FaceMetrix products mark PenPower’s extension of its business to the biometric field, Tsai indicated.
Unlike other recognizable characteristics, such as fingerprints, voiceprints and handwriting, facial characteristics can be used from a distance, and therefore facial-recognition technology can be applied to both security control (prevention of invasion) and the tracing of unauthorized persons (potential or actual invaders), Tsai pointed out.
Of the three new products, one is for controlling the PC log in, in place of the typed password. Another is for controlling entrance into homes or businesses, and the third is a combination of facial-recognition device, speed-dome camera and digital video recorder (DVR) for automatic security monitoring and subsequent tracing, Tsai said.
PenPower plans to apply facial-recognition software technology to the personal identification required in financial transactions, company personnel management and the handling of confidential files, Tsai noted.
