Lanner announces three new appliances featuring Intel Xeon 5500 platform
Press release, March 31; Ricky Morris, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 31 March 2009]

Lanner Electronics has announced three new rackmount systems built with the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series, based on the Nehalem microarchitecture.

The Lanner FW-9650 and FW-8892 are 2U network application platforms designed for enterprise-class intelligent network applications such as WAN acceleration, Internet gateway security and Unified Threat Management (UTM). Both are built with the Intel 5520 I/O Hub and Intel ICH10R I/O controller, and support dual Intel Xeon processors. The Lanner FW-8875 is a 1U rackmount platform that supports a single Intel Xeon processor.

All three platforms also offer optional network processor co-processors for faster throughput for enterprise-class network security and acceleration solutions, highlighted Lanner.

The Intel Nehalem microarchitecture includes an integrated memory controller with DDR3 support and includes Intel QuickPath, Turbo Boost, and Hyper-Threading Technologies. The associated Intel 5520 chipset supports up to 36 PCI Express 2.0 lanes and directly assignable I/O for virtualization, noted Lanner, adding that these features help deliver efficient performance for bandwidth-intensive embedded applications such as medical, storage, and security applications.

The Lanner FW-9650 is a dual-mainboard system with two Intel Xeon 5500 series processors per board. The FW-9650's modular design speeds application delivery and reduces service costs by allowing network modules, fans, hard drive trays and motherboard trays to be replaced without removing the system from the rack. The FW-9650 can be customizable with up to a maximum of 48 Gigabit Ethernet network ports.

The Lanner FW-8892 is also a 2U rackmount system with a single motherboard supporting two Intel Xeon processors. It offers a maximum of 24 network ports via three replaceable network modules, up to 48GB of DDR3 memory and four removable 3.5-inch hard drive trays.

The Lanner FW-8875 is a 1U platform that provides up to 24 network ports via add-on modules, one PCIe x8 expansion slot and redundant power supply, and has room for one 3.5-inch hard drive in its 1U chassis.
