Automobiles shipped as of 2020 are expected to each come equipped with just over one display on average as car vendors move toward developing smart applications.
Based on analysis from vehicle display makers, auto displays are expected to reach approximately 120 million by 2020 and come equipped with most newly released automobiles. An average of 1.2 displays will be used in vehicles as of the year.
The 1.2 display mark will be an increase from the expected 0.8 displays for most newly released automobiles in 2015, which is expected to bring in steady revenue increases for panel makers over the five-year period.
Automobiles are one of the newest areas that panel makers have been aiming at over the last two years. Previously, there was more emphasis on the high-end vehicle market but newly released cars ranging from entry-level to mid-range units are expected to come equipped with the technology as well.
Auto makers are also eyeing connectivity and want to include increased smart applications in their products to give them an edge in the market, the makers said.
AU Optronics (AUO) in particular is eyeing opportunities in the 7- to 12.3-inch segment and estimates to mass produce 12.3-inch Full HD vehicle displays in the second quarter of 2015. Innolux meanwhile estimates that vehicle displays will make up 10% of its display revenues by the end of 2015, up from about 5% at the beginning of the year.
Sources at Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics (KOE), a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Display Inc (JDI), also added that JDI aims to increase KOE's production capacity for vehicle displays from 180,000 at present to 450,000 by the end of 2016.
