The rise of Apple and Samsung Electronics has pushed HTC to rank number three in the US smartphone market with an approximately 14% market share. The firm plans to regain turf with the introduction of two new Windows Phone 8 (WP8) smartphones and at least two new smartphones with Google's Android platform.

Despite the rapid increase in popularity in China and emerging markets in Asia, HTC has been seeing falling sales in Europe and the US.

HTC plans to introduce two new Windows Phone 8 (WP8) handsets in the US on September 19, 2012. Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, and Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, will both host the product launch. The two new WP8 handsets will be named Windows Phone 8X by HTC and Windows Phone 8S by HTC. US-based telecommunications operators such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are expected to carry the new HTC products.

Windows Phone 8X by HTC adopts Qualcomm's S4 dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 4.3-inch high-definition super LCD 2 screen using Gorilla Glass 2. The product has two high-power audio amplifiers that accommodate the speaker and 3.5mm stereo headset jack. Windows Phone 8X by HTC also has an 8-megapixel CMOS image sensor and f/2.0 aperture. The front facing camera has been enhanced to 2.1-megapixel with aperture of f/2.0 and 88-degree wide angle lens.

Windows Phone 8S by HTC adopts Qualcomm's S4 dual-core 1GHz processor and 4-inch super LCD screen with Gorilla Glass. The product has a 5-megapixel camera.

HTC also plans to introduce new Android smartphones with 5-inch screens such as the HTC One X Plus to recapture market share in the US. Nevertheless, HTC will face tough competition from Apple's iPhone 5, Samsung's Galaxy series, Motorola Mobility's new Android handset and Nokia's WP8 smartphones.
