Samsung follows LG Display to supply panels used in iPad, say Taiwan makers

Samsung Electronics has reportedly become the second supplier of TFT-LCD panels for iPad using its SPVA (supper patterned vertical alignment) technology, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

LG Display (LGD) has been so far the only LCD panel supplier for iPad using the IPS (in-plane switching) technology, the sources noted, adding that LG Display shipped 300,000-400,000 panels for iPad in February and nearly 500,000 units in March 2010.

Both Samsung's and LG Display's panels meet Apple's requirements, such as scratch resistance, the sources said.

However, Chimei Innolux Corporation (CMI) and AU Optronics (AUO), the two largest panel makers in Taiwan, stand little chance of being selected as suppliers for iPad for the time being, the sources commented.
