Quanta Computer has won orders from Sony to ship C-Series notebooks to the Japanese vendor starting in 2009, according to market sources. Sony has split the orders between Quanta and Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), the sources pointed out.

Foxconn will have orders for 3.3-3.5 million units while Quanta will account for 1.5-1.6 million units, the sources explained.

Both Quanta and Foxconn declined to comment on the news.

Quanta had originally hoped to ship 40 million units in 2008 and while the global economy has recently been beset by bad news, Quanta still believes it will be able to achieve shipments of 38-40 million units based on strong orders from Hewlett-Packard and Apple.

Market sources noted that with HP remains optimistic about fourth quarter demand, and Quanta should be able to increase its orders to the vendor by about 500,000-600,000 units this quarter. Quanta has already supplied HP with over 10 million notebooks this year, and HP should account for 20-30% of Quanta's shipments this year.

Quanta will also be supplying Apple's new MacBook and the sources commented that Apple accounts for about 20% of Quanta's shipments this year. Quanta will also be the only OEM for Apple's new MacBook in 2009.
