Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) on May 8 announced the launch of DRM Free, a service allowing users to download MP3 songs that are free of digital rights management from CHT's emome online mobile service platform. Currently, there are 1,000 songs available through the service, which charges NT$25-35 (US$0.80-1.20) per song, CHT indicated. This is the first formal launch of a DRM-free service in Taiwan, according to industry sources. Some operators of online music services in Taiwan have offered download services before, but market response has been negative due to consumer complaints about use restrictions arising from DRM, the sources pointed out.
