Foxconn officially launches graphics card line, with Flextronics said to manufacture the high-end cards
Monica Chen, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 6 June 2006]

Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry) on June 6 officially announced its lineup of its own-brand graphics cards. The lineup includes Foxconn's self-produced products for the entry-level and mid-range market segments, while Flextronics International will produce its high-end Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT/GTX/GX2 cards, according to industry sources.

Flextronics has been partnering with Nvidia to manufacture high-end cards for Nvidia's customers for the past two years, and ATI Technologies also partners with contract makers for similar types of business, industry sources indicated. The customers could simply attach their brands to the finished products and potentially reduce their inventory risks because multiple companies could share the same basic design, according to sources.

Christin Wang, global marketing sales manager of Foxconn's Channel Service Division, stated in an interview that Foxconn's own-brand graphics cards are scheduled to begin shipping in volume in August. Foxconn anticipates it will ship one million Foxconn-branded graphics cards in 2006.

According to Wang, Foxconn currently has no plans to adopt an ATI solution in its own-brand graphics card lineup. Market sources believe that Foxconn's presence in the branded graphics card market may threaten market leader Asustek Computer's market position, as well as affecting ATI position against Nvidia.
