ECS goes dual platform with single-board Intel/AMD solution
Press release; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 3 June 2005]

At the ongoing Computex 2005 show in Taipei, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) is showcasing its PF88 Extreme Hybrid motherboard, which allows users to adapt their PC to a number of different computing platforms by adding a SIMA converter card to the motherboard.

The ECS SIMA card integrates a CPU socket, northbridge, memory DIMM and a PWM module, with the card then plugged into the PF88 motherboard to create the different PC solutions.

ECS is displaying three different SIMA cards for its PF88 motherboard at the Computex show. The first is the Socket 939 A9S, which supports the AMD K8 architecture and features a SiS 756 northbridge. The second is the A4S, which supports AMD Socket 754 CPUs, and features the SiS 756 northbridge. The third SIMA card is the I9S, which features the SiS 649 northbridge and supports Socket 479 Intel Pentium M CPUs with a 533 MHz FSB.

The Extreme Hybrid motherboard is designed for the PCI Express (PCIe) platform, and it supports dual-core CPUs, EM64T, eSATA, NCQ and SATA 2 technology, according to ECS. ECS has also included its Instant Overclocking Controller (IOC), which supports real-time CPU and GPU overclocking. The motherboard entered mass production in May this year, according to the company.

In related news, ECS has currently reached a total monthly capacity of 2.5 million motherboards and 250,000 notebooks at its Shenzhen plant, Guangdong Province (China), according to company president Ming-Tsun Chen. ECS has projected that its monthly motherboard shipments will top two million units in the latter half of the third quarter, up from an average of 1.5 million units in the first four months of this year.
