DRAMeXchange: DRAM prices may surge in October

Market Intelligence, DRAMeXchange

DRAM prices in both the spot and contract markets could trend upward in October.

Reluctant buying sentiment has suppressed transaction volume in the spot market this week. However, DRAMeXchange projects that the Computex exhibition in Taipei this week and China’s week-long National Day holiday beginning October 1 will spur spot market demand in Asia. DRAMeXchange also expects spot prices to edge up in October on Christmas inventory building.

In contrast to first-tier vendors’ expectations, DRAM contract prices will remain flat in second half of September due to weak market demand and sufficient inventory at PC OEMs. However, contract prices for DRAM modules are likely to surge by US$1-2 if positive signals arrive in October.

In the past, DRAM vendors quoted notebook SO-DIMMs and desktop Long-DIMMs at the same price. Starting in the second half this year, SO-DIMM contract prices have risen to US$1-2 above Long-DIMM prices due to strong notebook shipments.
