Compal: Recall of Toshiba PDAs poses little impact

In a filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE), Compal Electronics said that Toshiba’s recall of some Pocket PC e740s will have little financial impact on the contract manufacturer. The voluntary recall, announced on October 21, involves fewer than 10,000 units. Compal will have to pay for shipping expenses for the product exchanges.

Compal said a small batch of defective components supplied by a single component maker caused the problem, in which data could be lost if the battery is disconnected or runs out of charge. It said it has resolved the problem and has sufficient capacity to handle replacing the defective products.

Compal makes the Pocket PC e740 and e310 for Toshiba. In the TSE filing, the company projects its Pocket PC shipments in the fourth quarter will grow 20-30% from the third quarter. The company also manufactures Pocket PCs for Hitachi and Acer.
