Compal Electronics, after acquiring 70% of Dell's 2013 notebook orders, has also recently received 36% of Acer's total notebook orders for 2013 with an estimated volume of about 10.8 million units, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

As the top ODM partner of both Acer and Dell, Compal is also expected to receive a high proportion of orders from Lenovo for 2013 to help the company challenge ODM leader Quanta Computer, the sources noted.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is currently in the final phase of finishing its request for quotation (RFQ), while Lenovo has just recently started, with results expected to be finalized by mid-August. As for Asustek Computer, due to the company having its own R&D team it conducted its RFQ for 2013 a year earlier.

For the rest of Acer's orders in 2013, 30% will be outsourced to Wistron, 25% to Quanta and 8-9% to Pegatron Technology. Since Acer is estimated to ship 30 million notebooks in 2013, Compal will deliver 10.8 million units, Wistron nine million units, Quanta 7.5 million units and Pegatron 2.7 million units, but actual shipments may still vary.

Acer and the ODMs all declined to comment.

In Acer's 2013 orders, more than 80% of its 15-inch notebooks will be processed by Compal with the remaining orders shared by Wistron and Quanta. All its 14-inch model orders will go to Wistron; all 11-inch orders to Quanta, and all 17-inch orders to Pegatron.
