Global sales of MHL-enabled devices to double in 2012, says MHL president

Global sales of MHL (Mobile High-definition Link)-enabled terminal devices will more than double to over 100 million units in 2012, according to Tim Wong, president of MHL LLC which is responsible for administering the MHL Consortium.

Additionally, since the release of the first MHL specification in June 2010, there are now more than 100 licensees implementing the MHL standard worldwide, and the number is still growing, Wong said.

The penetration rate of MHL-enabled products in Japan is the highest in the Asia-Pacific area thanks to a mature consumer electronics entertainment market in that country, according to industry sources, who also believe that MHL technology will continue to gain momentum in the region.

Samsung Electronics has launched LCD TVs with an MHL cable which can be connected with micro USB ports on mobile devices or HDMI ports on LCD monitors supporting a data transmission bandwidth of 2.25Gbps and delivering 1080p uncompressed video.

The increasing popularity the MHL standard is unlikely to cause a squeeze-out effect on USB 3.0-based devices as the two technologies target different market segments, Wong stated, but he added that the growth of MHL products is faster than that of USB 3.0 devices currently.
