Analysts said IBM continues to show stable underlying revenue growth supported by artificial intelligence adoption and hybrid cloud demand. Its unchanged full-year outlook and softer software performance, however, may limit near-term upside expectations.
While the company maintained its 2026 revenue growth target and highlighted AI as a key tailwind, market reaction reflected concerns that the guidance does not fully capture the benefit of recent acquisitions and that software growth momentum is uneven across segments.
1Q26 results show broad-based growth but sharp profit volatility
On April 22, IBM reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of US$15.9 billion, up 9.5% year on year, according to company data. Gross profit rose 11.4% to US$8.95 billion, while operating income increased 55.7% to US$1.86 billion. Net profit rose 15.3% year on year to US$1.22 billion but declined sharply quarter on quarter, reflecting significant volatility in profitability.
Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna said, "The first quarter was a strong start to the year with broad-based revenue growth across our segments," adding that AI continues to act as a "tailwind for our global business" as clients scale deployment across hybrid environments.
Software slips while consulting lags
IBM's software segment, its largest business, recorded revenue of US$7.05 billion, up 11.3% year on year but down 21.9% quarter on quarter. Consulting revenue rose 4% year on year to US$5.27 billion, while infrastructure grew 15.3% to US$3.33 billion.
Analysts at Bloomberg Intelligence said the results point to "stable software and weak consulting demand," noting that the company's full-year revenue outlook of more than 5% constant currency growth appears conservative given expected contributions from acquisitions.
Meanwhile, Vital Knowledge said "the full-year guide was left unchanged," but flagged that software performance "fell a bit short on the top line," suggesting limited upside momentum in the near term.
AI narrative intact, but execution is everything
IBM said AI adoption continues to be a structural driver across its portfolio, with customers increasingly using IBM tools to "orchestrate, deploy and govern AI across hybrid environments."
Despite this positive narrative, analysts noted that revenue growth remains uneven across segments. Evercore ISI described the quarterly results as "solid," but said investor disappointment stemmed from "a lack of upside to CY26 revenue growth guide."
Guidance holds steady as currency and cash flow expectations stay unchanged
IBM reiterated its full-year 2026 outlook, continuing to expect more than 5% constant currency revenue growth and around US$1 billion in year-on-year free cash flow expansion. The company also noted that foreign exchange is expected to provide a modest tailwind of 0.5% to 1%.
Krishna emphasized that the guidance reflects confidence in demand visibility and portfolio integration, stating that IBM expects "more than 5% constant currency revenue growth and an increase of about US$1 billion in year-over-year free cash flow in 2026."
However, analysts highlighted that unchanged guidance may signal a cautious stance. Bloomberg Intelligence noted that the forecast "appears cautious," especially as recent acquisitions are expected to contribute meaningfully to sales growth.
Mixed signals cloud the growth outlook
Despite solid underlying results, IBM's stock reaction reflected investor concerns over near-term growth acceleration. Analysts broadly agreed that while AI and hybrid cloud demand remain supportive, software execution and acquisition integration will be key determinants of whether IBM can exceed its current growth trajectory.
Overall, the quarter reinforced IBM's positioning as a steady yet gradually evolving enterprise software and infrastructure player, with AI increasingly embedded in its long-term growth narrative but not yet translating into significantly upgraded guidance.
