Apple's newly introduced MacBook Neo, a low-cost laptop priced from US$599, uses the A18 Pro chip instead of the newer A19 Pro, according to a report from Wccftech, which attributed the decision partly to supply constraints affecting advanced semiconductor manufacturing nodes.
The launch follows Apple's record fiscal first-quarter 2026 revenue of US$143.76 billion, during which CEO Tim Cook discussed supply limitations tied to advanced semiconductor production.
Advanced-node supply constraints shape chip choice
According to Wccftech, Cook said during Apple's fiscal first-quarter 2026 earnings call that the limited availability of advanced semiconductor nodes had constrained Apple's supply chain, affecting shipments of products powered by its latest processors.
"The constraints that we have are driven by the availability of the advanced nodes that our SoCs are produced on, and at this time, we're seeing less flexibility in the supply chain than normal," Cook said during the call.
The report said these limitations affected production of devices using the A19 Pro processor, including the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. As a result, Apple equipped the MacBook Neo with the A18 Pro processor rather than the newer A19 Pro.
Had Apple used the A19 Pro in the MacBook Neo, the most visible specification difference would likely have been increased memory capacity.
Packaging design limits memory capacity
A separate report from TechPowerUp said the MacBook Neo's 8GB memory configuration is tied to the packaging design of the A18 Pro processor rather than a simple product positioning decision.
The A18 Pro used in the MacBook Neo is the same processor originally introduced in the iPhone 16 Pro. The chip arrives from TSMC with 8GB of LPDDR5X memory integrated through Integrated Fan-Out Package on Package (InFO-PoP) technology.
In this design, the memory sits directly above the system-on-chip in a 3D wafer-level fan-out package. The arrangement reduces printed circuit board size by eliminating a separate LPDDR5X module that would otherwise occupy more than 100 square millimeters of board space, according to TechPowerUp.
Because the memory is integrated into the processor package, MacBook Neo configurations are limited to the memory capacity included with the A18 Pro when it is packaged by TSMC. The LPDDR5X modules are shipped to TSMC for integration into the InFO-PoP package before the completed chips are delivered to Apple for system assembly.
The report noted that while the 8GB memory configuration has drawn criticism from some observers, the design choices tied to the processor packaging and Apple's goal of maintaining lower unit costs limit the available memory capacity. The devices run macOS, a Unix-based operating system designed to manage memory efficiently within this configuration.
Benchmarks show performance comparable to M1 MacBook Air
Initial benchmark results suggest the MacBook Neo delivers performance similar to the iPhone 16 Pro, according to MacRumors.
The MacBook Neo uses the same six-core A18 Pro processor introduced in the iPhone 16 Pro, though the laptop version includes one fewer GPU core. In early benchmark tests, the MacBook Neo recorded a single-core score of 3,461, a multi-core score of 8,668, and a Metal graphics score of 31,286.
For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro achieved a single-core score of 3,445, a multi-core score of 8,624, and a Metal score of 32,575.
Other benchmark comparisons cited by MacRumors include the M1-based MacBook Air, which recorded single-core and multi-core scores of 2,346 and 8,342, respectively, with a Metal score of 33,148. The M4 MacBook Air posted higher results, including a multi-core score of 14,730 and a Metal score of 54,630.
The MacBook Neo's multi-core performance is broadly comparable to the M1 MacBook Air, while its single-core performance exceeds that of the older system, the report said.
MacRumors noted that strong single-core performance aligns with the intended usage for the MacBook Neo, which targets tasks such as web browsing, document editing, and media streaming rather than workloads such as video editing, music production, or 3D modeling.
Apple has not directly compared MacBook Neo performance with other Macs, iPads, or iPhones, according to the report. Instead, Apple's marketing materials position the A18 Pro as delivering up to 50% faster performance for everyday tasks compared with the bestselling PC using the latest Intel Core Ultra 5 processor. The company also says the chip can provide up to three times faster on-device AI workloads and up to twice the performance in photo editing.
MacBook Neo starts at US$599 in the US, or about US$499 for education customers. The device is currently available for preorder and is scheduled to launch on March 11.
