Weibing Lu, partner and president of Xiaomi as well as president of the Smartphone Department, announced on September 15, 2025, that the new flagship Xiaomi 17 series will be unveiled in September. It will become the world's first smartphone equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 computing platform.

Reportedly, the Xiaomi 17 series is expected to include three models: Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. The Xiaomi 17 is positioned as the "strongest standard flagship ever," offering upgrades in specifications and user experience while maintaining competitive pricing. The two Pro models focus on advanced imaging and technological breakthroughs, with the 17 Pro emphasizing high-end compact imaging performance, and the 17 Pro Max regarded as Xiaomi's most powerful technology and imaging flagship to date.

Lu noted that five years ago, Xiaomi initiated a strategy to move upmarket, directly challenging Apple's iPhone. Although the iPhone still holds significant influence globally, Xiaomi has steadily narrowed the gap through continuous investment. By deeply integrating hardware and software, Xiaomi has made notable progress in the premium market segment.

Over the past five years, Xiaomi's R&D investment has exceeded CNY100 billion (approx. US$14 billion), with plans to increase this to CNY200 billion over the next five years. Lu stressed that the Xiaomi 17 series will showcase these accumulated achievements and bring breakthroughs in foundational technologies and application experiences.

However, Xiaomi continues to face pressure from intense competition in the smartphone market. According to the latest financial report, Xiaomi's smartphone business revenue for the second quarter of 2025 was CNY45.5 billion, down 2% year-over-year. The average selling price (ASP) dropped to CNY1,073.2, a 2.7% year-over-year decrease, mainly due to pricing impacts from the Redmi A5 series in overseas markets combined with rising costs of memory and battery materials, which led to an overall gross margin decline to 11.5%.

Xiaomi shipped 42.4 million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter of 2025, representing only about 0.6% year-over-year growth, slowing down from the 3% growth seen in the first quarter.

According to IDC statistics, total smartphone shipments in China during the second quarter of 2025 reached 68.86 million units, a year-over-year decline of approximately 4.1%. Canalys data shows global smartphone shipments for the same period were 288.9 million units, roughly flat compared to the second quarter of 2024. The top five manufacturers by shipment volume were Samsung Electronics, Apple, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Transsion.

Industry analysts believe that Xiaomi's early adoption of the Snapdragon 8 Elite with the Xiaomi 17 series, along with enhanced imaging and premium experiences, will help reshape its brand positioning amid fierce competition and declining ASPs.

As demand in both China and the global smartphone markets remains under pressure, whether Xiaomi can leverage the 17 series to drive a new wave of growth momentum will be a key focus for the market.
