LG Group chairman Kwang-mo Koo traveled to India to assess the company's R&D, production, and distribution as LG commemorates 30 years in the market. This visit aligns with LG's strategy to expand in India while managing risks associated with US-China tensions.

According to South Korean media reports, Koo's four-day trip began on February 24 and included visits to Bangalore and New Delhi. This marks the first time an LG Group leader has visited India since the late chairman, Koo Bon-moo, in 2004.

Koo's itinerary included a visit to LG Electronics' Noida factory in New Delhi, where the company manufactures home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. He also inspected LG brand stores and Reliance retail locations to assess localized products. After reviewing the production line, Koo stated that LG aims to strengthen its market position over the next 30 years by leveraging customer insights and differentiated strategies from Chinese competitors.

In Bangalore, Koo visited LG's software research institute, which employs over 2,000 local researchers. The facility, directed by LG's South Korean headquarters, focuses on smart TV operating systems such as webOS and automotive solutions. During his visit, Koo emphasized the importance of global R&D objectives to enhance software competitiveness.

Industry insiders view Koo's visit as a strategic move in response to shifting geopolitical conditions. With growing uncertainties in markets like the US and China, LG seeks to mitigate risks by increasing its presence in India. The company operates factories in Noida and Pune and plans to establish a new production site in Andhra Pradesh. LG Electronics also intends to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in India in the first half of 2025.

Beyond electronics, LG Chem plans to open a factory in India in 2025 to support growth in the petrochemical market. LG Energy Solutions is also exploring opportunities in the emerging Indian battery sector.
