Indium Corporation expands Chennai plant, aims to drive India's chip ambitions

Indium Corporation is reinforcing its engagement with India's growing semiconductor sector by enhancing its operations and fostering relationships with local partners.

Recently, the company has expanded its capabilities at its Chennai manufacturing facility. This development aims to better support customers in the semiconductor packaging and assembly industries with localized solutions.

"We have made enhancements to our manufacturing plant in Chennai, expanding its capabilities. Additionally, we are exploring opportunities to manufacture and blend closer to our semiconductor customers through collaboration with local partners and vendors," said Andy Mackie, Principal Engineer for advanced materials at Indium Corporation.

Driving India's semiconductor revolution

As India accelerates its efforts to establish a robust semiconductor ecosystem, Indium Corporation is aligning its strategy to meet the country's ambitious goals.

The company is actively supporting the Indian Design Semiconductor Packaging and Systems (IDSPS) initiative, which aims to bolster the nation's semiconductor packaging capabilities. Mackie emphasized the company's commitment to India's journey.

"We are looking forward to having our thought leaders and technology leaders attend the IDSPS workshops planned for February 2025, as well as participate in the iSPEC2.0 conference in Gandhinagar in March 2025," Mackie said.

In addition to supporting government initiatives, Indium Corporation is engaging with academic institutions such as the IITs and IISc to offer training and share technical expertise in semiconductor packaging and assembly.

Fostering local innovation and collaboration

Recognizing the potential of India's engineering talent, Indium Corporation is exploring partnerships with startups and smaller players to foster innovation in semiconductor packaging.

These partnerships aim to address the unique needs of the Indian market while contributing to global advancements in packaging technologies.

The company is also rolling out training modules, developed in collaboration with key equipment partners and customers. Designed to educate individuals from non-academic backgrounds about semiconductor assembly, these modules are anticipated to be introduced in 2025, with the goal of supporting skill development within the industry.

Addressing challenges in a transforming landscape

India's expansive geography and evolving infrastructure present challenges, particularly in handling temperature-sensitive materials. Mackie noted that localized manufacturing is essential to overcoming these hurdles.

"Our focus is on ensuring a stable supply of critical materials while addressing logistical challenges," he said. "This includes mitigating risks from global supply chain disruptions through agreements with key suppliers and strengthening local capabilities."

A vision for sustainability and growth

Indium Corporation's long-term strategy not only aligns with India's semiconductor aspirations but also underscores the importance of sustainability and self-reliance.

The company is a member of both IESA and ELCINA and has been a vocal advocate for the IDSPS initiative, which seeks to create a sustainable ecosystem for semiconductor packaging and systems.

"An educated workforce with an actionable vision of the future is essential," Mackie said. "The IDSPS plan is starting to crystallize into reality, but it will require the full cooperation of government, academia, and industry to be successful."
