Samsung Galaxy Ring, slated for potential release in the latter half of 2024, is expected to integrate with the company's AI-powered custom recipe platform, Samsung Food.
The smart ring product, equipped with health management features, is also connected to AI home appliances, creating a comprehensive Samsung AI service ecosystem.
Reports from the Korean media outlet Chosun Biz have indicated Samsung's Mobile Experience (MX) division and Home Appliances Division are in active development of ways to connect the Galaxy Ring, Samsung Food, Samsung home appliance products (such as refrigerators, ovens, etc.), and Samsung e-Shop all under the same system.
Samsung's health AI ecosystem
Reportedly, upon measuring user health information in real-time with the Galaxy Ring, Samsung Food will recommend customized recipes based on factors such as calories, BMI, and more.
Furthermore, if the device is synchronized with Samsung's refrigerators equipped with AI functions, Samsung Food can analyze the available ingredients. The system will then suggest dishes for users to cook and even send cooking instructions directly to Samsung AI ovens.
Insufficient ingredients can also be ordered for delivery through Samsung e-Shop.
In 2019, Samsung acquired the largest recipe-sharing app, "Whisk," and combined it with AI to launch Samsung Food in August 2023 across 104 countries. The app serving as a "personal nutritionist" will further integrate with Samsung's home appliances to provide differentiated services.
Industry insiders note that the Galaxy Ring, which can be worn 24/7, offers higher accuracy in collecting user health information than the existing Galaxy Watch. Moreover, its lower price makes it more accessible.
Samsung has previously experimented with providing dietary recommendations through the Galaxy Watch, collaborating with Hyundai Green Food to recommend healthy foods. According to market research firm Emergen Research, the global food tech market was valued at US$220.3 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach US$342.5 billion by 2027, growing by 55.4%.
Relevant figures in the electronics industry suggest that if the Galaxy Ring is linked with Samsung Food upon its release, it will be able to significantly boost its global user base, expanding its global food delivery business.
Rising competition
Moreover, the competition in the smart ring market for the South Korean giant is expected to intensify.
Competitors such as Oura Health from the Netherlands have already launched the third-generation Oura Ring. Apple and South Korean startups Sky Labs and EMEDI Healthcare have registered multiple patents.
However, Samsung's early investment in AI mobile and home appliance product development which has gradually formed into a complete AI service ecosystem will give the conglomerate an edge over its competitors.
