Sales of smartphones in the China market increased 12% sequentially to 25.56 million units in June, according to data from the China Academy of Information and Technology (CAICT).

Models supporting 5G technology became mainstream in China in June, with related shipments reaching 19.79 million units or 77% of total handset shipments in the month, the data showed.

While local brands, including Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, continued ramping up their share in the domestic market in June, Apple saw its market share in the country dip to 5% in the month compared to 15% seen in the previous month.

The data also showed that handset shipments in China increased 13.7% on year to 174 million units in the first half of 2021, of which 128 million units were 5G-enabled models.

Smartphone shipments in China are set to move upward in the third quarter, given the September quarter is traditionally a peak season for handset sales, said sources from Taiwan's handset supply chain.
