Mobile SoC specialist MediaTek saw its January revenue surge nearly 80% from the same period in 2020.

MediaTek reported revenue of NT$35.33 billion (US$1.26 billion) for January 2021, up 78.3% from a year earlier and 9% sequentially. The results were also the second highest monthly level in the company's history.

MediaTek expects to post revenue growth of up to 8% sequentially to between NT$96.4 billion and NT$104.1 billion in the first quarter of 2021. Thanks to a ramp-up in shipments for 5G smartphones, as well as growing shipments for 4G phones and Chromebooks, MediaTek's overall mobile chip shipments will see a substantial rise in the quarter compared to fourth-quarter 2020, company CEO Rick Tsai was quoted as saying in previous reports.

MediaTek will see its 2021 revenues grow robustly with gross margin ranging from 43% to 44%, Tsai also noted previously. The company generated revenue of NT$322.15 billion in 2020, rising 30.8% on year and hitting a record high.
