Having just released their new or upgraded SoC solutions for the mid-range to high-end 5G smartphones recently, Qualcomm and MediaTek both are prepared to launch new SOCs for the entry-level 5G phone segment with the new offerings likely to come in the third quarter 2020, according to industry sources.

In a neck-and-neck competition, MediaTek announced on May 18 its Dimensity 820 SoC for the mid-range 5G phone that will challenge the mid-tier chipset, Snapdragon 768G, that rival Qualcomm released on May 10.

But the competition did not stop there. The two vendors apparently believe that global 5G phone shipments will top 200 million units in 2020, about half of which will be shipped to the China market, the sources said, adding the companies are committed to continuing to roll out new SoCs to address the needs of handset clients.

Qualcomm is likely to introduce new 5G SoCs in the Snapdragon 6xx lineup, as it has released the Snapdragon 8xx lineup for high-end 5G models and the Snapdragon 7xx for midrange ones, indicated the sources.

MediaTek has yet to name its forthcoming entry-level 5G SoC. But it is likely to be a Dimensity 7xx lineup, the sources noted.
