Dell accomplished the goal of recycling two billion pounds of electronic wastes by 2018, two years ahead of schedule set in the Dell 2020 Legacy of Good Plan, and the company is also cooperating with an India startup to turn diesel engine exhaust gas into printing ink, according to Kefetew Selassie, vice president of engineering with client solutions group at Dell and head of Dell Taiwan Design Center.
Selassie said that since 2008, Dell has moved to collect electronics wastes, including used consumer plastics, closed-type electronic plastics, carbon fiber wastes, marine plastics and gold for recycling purposes. The company expects to adopt 100 million pounds of recycled materials in its product lines before the 2019 Earth Day on April 22.
Dell has applied recycled electronics materials to its desktops, servers, monitors, and notebooks, Selassie disclosed, adding that Dell is the first brand vendor to recycle gold from motherboards, to utilize recycled marine plastics in its products, and to launch notebook models 100% adopting recycled carbon fiber.
He continued that Dell is also teaming up with a small India startup Chakr Innovation to recycle exhaust gas emitted from diesel generators in the South Asia country into inks for printing and packaging uses, with over 150,000 boxes printed with recycled inks so far.
