Taiwan implements 4-year project to boost intelligent transportation systems

Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) is implementing a 4-year (2017-2020) development project with a total budget of NT$3 billion (US$97.4 million) to promote establishment of intelligent transportation systems through cooperation among government bodies, research organizations, universities and enterprises.

The promotion has so far made significant achievements in six areas: mobility as a service (MaaS), connected motorcycles, smart transportation corridor, connected autonomous driving vehicles, integrated smart transportation management, public transportation platforms in rural or remote areas, MOTC said.

MOTC sets the following goals for the project: Reduction in traffic congestion by 25%; reduction in the number of accidents caused by automobiles and motorcycles by 20%; hike in use of public transportation services by 10%; hike in accessibility to public transportation in rural or remote areas by 20%; and total production value of NT$30 billion generated by related industries.

MaaS

Public transportation vehicles, hotels, travel services, retail stores at sight-seeing spots are integrated into one-stop solutions for mobile transportation services in Taipei City, New Taipei City, Yilan County and Kaohsiung City.

Connected motorcycles

Two experimental connected motorcycle sites have been established in two university campuses separately in Yilan County and Hualien County, with more than 4,000 motorcycles equipped with sensors and nearly 30 intersections of roads installed with sensing devices and warning posts.

Smart transportation corridor

A Bluetooth push notification system has been established along No.5 national freeway; a cloud computing-based information platform for transportation management in the Taipei metropolitan area and Yilan County together is being developed; dynamic traffic light control based on big data analysis to relax traffic jams has been trialed in Taichung City and Hsinchu City, with delay time due to traffic jam reduced by 10-30%.

Autonomous driving electric shuttle buses have been experimented in selected closed test fields in Taichung, Taoyuan and Kaohsiung Cities.

integrated smart transportation management

AI technology has been applied to analysis of hot spots of traffic accidents, detection of vehicular flows as well as warning for pedestrians; all tour buses have been installed with GPS devices for tracking them and monitoring their running conditions.

public transportation platforms in rural or remote areas

A GPS-based monitoring system has been set up for operation of public buses along highways between Hualien County and Taitung County, with bus stops installed with displays of buses' arrival time.
