Digitimes Research: Top notebook vendors and ODMs see over 10% on-month shipment growth in August

Jim Hsiao, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei

The global top-5 Wintel notebook brand vendors' combined shipments grew 17% on month in August, but compared to the same month a year ago, the volume was down 14%. Meanwhile the top-3 ODMs' combined volume was up 13% on month, but down 17% on year. Their on-month growths were mainly driven by the retailers' inventory preparation for the peak season. Windows 10's effect on notebook shipments so far is not yet clear.

The top-5 brand vendors except Asustek and Dell, enjoyed significant on-month shipment growths in August and Acer had the strongest increase of more than 40%. Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Lenovo (not including NEC) both had about 30% on-month growth in August, but HP's shipments still led Lenovo's by a small margin, according to Digitimes Research's figures.

Dell's weak shipments in August shows that the demand from the enterprise segment was probably weakening.

The top-3 ODMs all had strong on-month shipment growths in August. Quanta Computer had the highest growth thanks to increased orders from HP. Compal Electronics and Wistron both saw growths because of Lenovo's orders.
