BLU makers to see drops in revenues due to iPad shipment adjustments

Taiwan-based backlight units (BLU) makers such as Radiant Opto-Electronics will most likely see decreases in revenues during the third quarter due to Apple adjusting its iPad orders, according to industry sources.

In the first half of 2012, Apple shipped 29 million second and third generation iPads and reported approximately 32 million in panel order. However, panel shipments are expected to decrease as Apple is adjusting its inventory in preparation of releasing new tablet products such as a 7.85-inch iPad in the third quarter.

Supply chain related BLU makers such as Radiant already saw a 15% on-month decrease in July due to the adjustments, and expect third-quarter revenues will be 5-10% less compared with the second quarter, added the sources.

Radiant does expect a rebound in the fourth quarter due to expected orders for Apple's MacBook Air and MacBook Pro during the holiday season, said the sources.
