Morris Chang, chairman and CEO of TSMC, noted that the firm will focus on developing thin-film solar products. TSMC is one of the shareholders of solar cell maker Motech. Chang added that in the future, TSMC will switch investments from strategic to financial.

Chang emphasized that investments for TSMC Solar are absolutely strategic. TSMC holds a 95% shake in TSMC Solar.

The market believes TSMC may sell its Motech shares in the future.

TSMC explained that the firm has been developing CIGS thin-film solar products. The reason it invested in Motech was because it is a vertically integrated firm that produces silicon-based solar products, added TSMC. The firm believes customers may demand both types of products. Nevertheless, in the future, TSMC will focus on CIGS products.

Industry sources noted that the solar market has been facing market downturns since the second quarter of 2011.

TSMC expressed optimism towards the solar market and hopes TSMC Solar will become one of the strong contributors of revenues in the future.
