Taiwan-based battery makers Simplo Technology and DynaPack International Technology are less affected by tight supply of Sony's battery cores than their foreign competitors because their sourcing from the Japanese maker is relatively low, according to industry sources.
Sony has reduced supply of battery cores to other companies, reserving supply for its own production to meet replacement needs caused by battery recalls, the sources indicated. The decreases in Sony's supply, coupled with high seasonal demand, has resulted in tight battery-core supply this quarter, the sources commented.
Other suppliers, such as Samsung SDI, has been unable to significantly increase their production of battery cores on time, the sources said. From the other hand, it is very difficult battery makers to start using new sources of battery cores in a short time because the move requires new product validations from clients, and it usually takes three months, the sources added.
Compal Electronics president Ray Chen today said that tight supply of components, including batteries, panels and DRAM, will reduce the company's notebook shipments in the fourth quarter by 100,000 units each month.
