Protop Innotech steps into production of portable DVD players

Protop Innotech, a leading manufacturer of DVD players and recorders in Taiwan, has extended its production to portable DVD players and modules on an OEM basis with current monthly shipments of 200,000-300,000 players/modules, according to the company.

Protop has developed car-use and portable DVD players, but has not yet begun volume production of the former because it is much more expensive than the portable units, the company indicated.

The OEM price for portable DVD players currently ranges between US$120-130 and may fall to US$100 in 2006 along with continual drops in procurement costs for TFT-LCD panels and loaders, two main components of portable DVD players, Protop pointed out. The company expects sales volume for portable DVD players to grow steadily and account for the bulk of its shipments in 2006.
