Macronix International (MXIC) is said to be in talks with Infineon Technologies and Renesas Technology about partnerships on ramping up MXIC’s 12-inch capacity at its Fab 3, according to sources.
Sources indicated that MXIC’s orders alone are not enough to fill Fab 3 and the company needs to find partners as soon as possible in order to meet its capacity ramp schedule. MXIC plans to begin pilot runs at the fab in early 2005.
The company declined to comment on the news, but admitted that it has not ruled out the possibility of collaborating with other companies to ramp Fab 3. MXIC did not elaborate on the details.
According to sources, MXIC completed construction of the buildings and clean rooms for Fab 3 in mid-2003. The fab is ready to begin pilot runs as soon as equipment is installed. Fab 3 is designed to process 20,000 12-inch wafers per month and 20,000 8-inch wafers per month.
