Trends and shipment forecast for 2H 2012 smartphone market

Global smartphone shipments will top 630 million units in 2012, representing on-year growth of 35%, which is more more moderate annual growth than seen in previous years. Smartphone shipments in 2010 and 2011 both enjoyed growth of more than 60%. Growth will decelerate in 2012 due to the high base, as well as a slowdown in consumer spending in Western Europe.

Trends and shipment forecast for 2H 2012 tablet market
In the second half of 2012, poor global economic growth is having a more significant impact on the global market for branded tablets than had previously been anticipated. Digitimes Research therefore remains conservative about the prospects for the period, with half-year shipments projected to reach 49.18 million units and whole-year shipments being revised downward to 88.69 million units. Apple, the Google-Asus Nexus 7, Amazon and Microsoft are expected to account for more than 76% of the market and will reach 38.5 million units.

Global economic turmoil has seriously impacted growth in the PC market and it will remain weak (2Q-3Q) leading up to the launch of Windows 8, whose initial benefit will mainly be satisfying delayed demand from the third quarter. For the year, global shipments will reach 207 million, a growth rate of only 2.1% from 2011. Lenovo, Asustek Computer, Apple and Samsung will all achieve a strong performance to help them gain market share in the second half of the year, while HP and Dell will face a decline with Acer expected to maintain its ranking.
