2013 global tablet forecast

Based on analysis of the major platform companies and the white box market, Digitimes Research forecasts that global tablet shipments (including both branded and white box models) will overtake notebook shipments in 2013, growing by 38.3% on 2012 levels to hit 210 million units. Shipments of branded tablets alone are forecast to reach 140 million units.

2013 TFT LCD industry and market outlook

2013 Greater China IC foundry industry forecast

Digitimes Research predicts that the output value of China's IC foundry industry will reach US$3.29 billion in 2012, up 13.7% from US$2.89 billion in 2011. Looking into 2013, the output value for China's IC foundry sector will see a modest 2.1% increase to US$3.36 billion. In Taiwan, the foundry sector will report US$21.95 billion and US$23.32 billion, respectively, in output value for 2012 and 2013. The former figure and the latter represent growth of 11.8% and 6.2%, respectively.

The launch of Windows 8 is significant both for Microsoft and for the industry as a whole. Windows 8 will have two major impacts on the PC and tablet markets. Firstly, it will stimulate growth in touchscreen devices. Projective capacitive touch panels are likely to become the mainstream touch technology on the basis of current trends, and their use with spread from mobile devices into PC products. Second, Windows 8 will expedite the uptake of ultra-thin systems like ultrabooks and tablets, and will therefore increase the penetration rate of SSDs.

In 2012, shipments for touch panels used in handsets will increase 17.8% on year in 2012, making up 76.2% of touch panel shipments. In the second half of 2012, the market focus is on the iPhone 5, which uses in-cell touch screen technology. Due to the integration of display panels and touch panel functions, the high technological threshold will mean Taiwan touch panel makers are unable to enter the iPhone's supply chain. As a result panel orders will be allocated to Japan Display and LG Display. Sharp may also obtain orders by fourth-quarter 2012.
