Digitimes Research: Taiwan makers see decrease in 4Q12 handset shipments

Taiwan-based OBMs (own-brand manufacturers), JDMs (joint-development manufacturers) and ODMs shipped 14.64 million handsets in total in the fourth quarter of 2012, decreasing 2.5% on quarter and 26% on year, according to Digitimes Research.

Digitimes Research: China solar firms continue to see losses in 3Q12

Due to fluctuating demand in Europe, China-based solar module firms Yingli, Suntech and Trina Solar saw shipments in third-quarter 2012 decrease by 16.9%, 10%, and 9% respectively. Jinko Solar, on the other hand, benefitted from domestic demand, and saw total shipments increase by 20% in the same period. Yingli's accumulated shipments in the first three quarters of 2012 reached 1.55GW and expects total shipments in 2012 to exceed 2GW, representing growth compared to 2011.

China-based panel maker BOE recently signed an investment agreement with the Chongqing Municipal Government to jointly invest CNY$32.8 billion (US$5.26 billion) in constructing a new 8.5G line within the western China municipality. The line is expected to begin construction no later than the third quarter of 2013 and is likely to be completed by the second quarter of 2015.

Of the shipments, approximately 1.28 billion or 73% are estimated to be for handsets, which will be a 14.2% on-year increase. Shipments for touch screens used in tablets meanwhile are expected to reach 230 million units, up 38.2% on year, while touch screens for PCs are expected to reach 26.33 million in 2013, up 251.3% on year, according to Digitimes Research.
