Digitimes Research: Taiwan makers see decrease in 4Q12 handset shipments

Taiwan-based OBMs (own-brand manufacturers), JDMs (joint-development manufacturers) and ODMs shipped 14.64 million handsets in total in the fourth quarter of 2012, decreasing 2.5% on quarter and 26% on year, according to Digitimes Research.

Of the shipments, 13.54 million or 92.5% were smartphones, rising 1.3% on quarter but dropping 1.1% on year, while WCDMA, CDMA and GSM models accounted for 68.2%, 26.6% and 5.1% respectively, said Digitimes Research.

Smartphone vendor HTC shipped 6.4 million units in the fourth quarter, followed by Chi Mei Communication Systems with 2.7 million units, Compal Communications with 2.5 million, Arima Communications with two million, and Inventec Appliances with 600,000 units.
