Digitimes Research: Panel makers trends in 2012 and 2013
Tony Huang, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei [Friday 30 November 2012]

Digitimes Research estimates that in 2013 China-based panel makers will continue to dominate the 32-inch LCD TV panel market in China as well as expand their product lines by providing new panel sizes such as 28- and 46-inch. It is also estimated that China-based panel makers will have an on-year increase of 42.7% for their TV panel shipments.

Additionally, because Samsung Electronics reduced shipments for PCs that use TFT LCD panels in the second half of 2012 in order to increase its overall profits, AUO surpassed Samsung in notebook panel shipments to become the number-two notebook panel supplier in the world. However, it is expected that demand for PCs that use panels will be flat in 2013, which will cause AUO to invest more in tablet panels and increase its shipments for the panels by 260% on year in 2013, added Digitimes Research.

Digitimes Research added that Innolux Corporation (which changed its name from Chimei Innolux (CMI) on November 14, 2012) was the lead supplier of 29-, 39-, 50- and 58-inch TV panels in 2012. Innolux's new panel sizes were well received in the market and caused AUO and LGD to start producing the specialized sizes as well. However, all of the suppliers may face increased competition in 2013 as Sharp and Foxconn Electronics have already released their 60-inch TV and have done so with high production capacity rates, low production costs, and the decreasing value of the Japanese Yen. This means that panel makers such as Innolux will most likely focus on Full HD LCD TV panels in 2013, with Innolux expected to hold over 50% of the market.
