Digitimes Research: Proportion of 300ppi and above panels used in handsets to increase to 20% in 2013 Jen-Chieh Yang, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei [Wednesday 28 November 2012]
Approximately 20% of panels used in handsets during 2013 are expected to have resolutions of 300ppi and above, an on-year increase of 6.2pp, according to Digitimes Research. The increase is largely due to Korea- and Japan-based makers bumping up their LTPS TFT LCD and AMOLED panel production capacity to further tackle the high-end smartphone market. The makers plan to produce 300-400ppi panels for use in smartphones that will have 4- to 5-inch screens, said Digitimes Research. Additionally, LG Display is expected to hold 33.6% of the tablet panel market in 2013 as it is expected to continue providing panels for iPad mini, Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7. Other top panel providers during the period will include AU Optronics (AUO), Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) and HannStar Display, added Digitimes Research. |
