Digitimes Research: Samsung Electronics holds strong in 2012 due to panel production strategies
Tony Huang, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei [Thursday 8 November 2012]

Samsung Electronics has held the top spot in terms of revenues generated in 2012 compared to other Asia-based panel makers such as LG Display (LGD), Chimei Innolux (CMI) and AU Optronics (AUO) due to its strategies, which include focusing on small- to medium-size OLED panels and large LCD TV panels, according to Digitimes Research.

Throughout the first three quarters of 2012, Samsung held the top sales spot because it correctly identified trends and consumer expectations for panels. Samsung is expected to remain strong in the panel industry and will most likely still hold the top sales spot in the fourth quarter of 2012, added Digitimes Research.

However, LGD may have a good chance of claiming the top spot since it now receives orders from Apple for several of the company's products instead of Samsung due to recent disputes between Samsung and Apple, added Digitimes Research.

Meanwhile, China-based BOE and China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) will further pose challenges for both Taiwan- and Korea-based panel makers due to their expanded 32-inch TV panel production.
