Sony has presented the development of dye-sensitized solar cells at Japan's Eco-Products 2008. The technology does not require expensive and large-scale production equipment, making it a next-generation solar cell to challenge silicon-based solar cells.

These prototype LED lamps from Sony use panels of dye-sensitized solar cells to power their LEDs. The dye-sensitized cells are cheaper than conventional solar cells and can be dyed in different colors and shades.
