Digitimes Research: More software developers join Android camp Danny Kuo, DIGITIMES Research [Wednesday 20 March 2013]  More and more software developers and free software projects are willing to join development for the Android platform in view of the dynamic shipment growth demonstrated by Android-based smartphones over the past quarters, during which Android smartphones managed to take up a 70% share of the global smartphone market, while rival iOS saw its share slip to 15-20%, according to Digitimes Research. According to Digitimes Research, at least three Android-related software development projects are worthy of attention: the BlueStacks App Player being developed by BlueStacks, Ubuntu for Android by the Ubuntu Foundation, and Wine for Android by Wine. The BlueStacks App Player allows Android software to run on x86-based hardware devices, Ubuntu for Android will enable Android phones to execute Android applications as well as Ubuntu Linux applications, and the Wine for Android will enable Android phones to run Windows applications. Rival operating systems for smartphones and PCs should ramp up shipments of hardware devices, enhance differentiation and increase added-value so as to stem their associated software developers from shifting to the Android camp, Digitimes Research commented.
