Local smartphone vendors in India have outperformed most foreign players, and together accounted for over 30% of the smartphone market in the country in the first quarter of 2013, according to data compiled by IDC.
Samsung Electronics ranked as the top smartphone vendor in India in the first quarter of 2013 with a 32.7% share, followed by India-based Micromax with 19% and Karbonn Mobiles with 11%, the IDC data showed.
Meanwhile, sales of smartphones in India have been growing rapidly in 2013. For the first four months of 2013, smartphone shipments in the country totaled 9.4 million units, increasing 167% from a year earlier, while sales of feature phones grew a mere 2.4% during the same period, according to CyberMedia Research.
In addition to Micromax and Karbonn, two other local brands Spice and Lava are also emerging as first-tier vendors in India, according to industry sources.
Most local brands in India have been pushing sales through retail channels with aggressive pricing, while relying less on subsidized phone deals offered by telecom operators, indicated the sources.
