In-Stat: Penetration of HDTV service to rise 35% in 2H 06
Press release, August 16; Emily Chuang, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 16 August 2006]

The number of households with HDTV services, which are homes with an HDTV set that can receive HDTV signals and watch HDTV programs, are projected to grow 35% from 15 million units in mid-2006 to 20.3 million at the end of 2006, according to research firm In-Stat.

Consumer demand for viewing World Cup in high defintion contents has served as a catalyst for the start of HDTV services in several European countries, says Mike Paxton, an In-Stat analyst. In addition, select TV households in countries like China, Singapore and Mexico can now also get HDTV service, Paxton indicated.

As of mid-2006, Japan the US accounted for 91% of worldwide HDTV households. Other countries with significant numbers of HDTV households include South Korea, Australia and Canada.

The number of worldwide HDTV households is expected to spike over the next few years as new markets for HD services, particularly in Europe, open up. By the end of 2009, In-Stat expects the number of HDTV households to exceed 55 million units.

HDTV services are currently delivered by all types of TV service providers, including satellite/direct-to-home service providers, cable TV operators, telco TV operators, and terrestrial broadcasters.

In the US, there is still a discrepancy between HD services and the penetration of HDTV sets. Currently, only one-third of US households with HD-readyTV sets are actually using them to watch HDTV programs.
