Sony has opened the gateway for multiple memory card standards for its upcoming PS3 since the game-console maker now regards PS3 as a portable multimedia center, rather than just a game console, industry players commented.
The new PS3 game console will support Sony’s own-developed memory cards, the MemoryDuo/Pro, as well as Compact Flash (CF) and Secure Digital (SD) cards, according to the released specification.
The majority of Sony’s consumer-electronics applications, including digital cameras, PDAs and previous generations of the PS only adopt Sony’s own-developed memory card format, the memory stick. The market share of the memory stick has stayed firm, with Sony maintaining a solid foothold in the consumer-electronics industry.
Positioning the PS3 as a portable multimedia center, Sony has now lowered the barriers to memory-card use. With the popularity of the SD card in Japan, Sony has adopted SD as one of the memory card standards supported by the PS3.
Although MultiMediaCard (MMC) cards also hold a solid market share, Sony has not introduced MMC compatibility to the PS3 since this type of card is not as popular as other memory-card formats in Japan.
