Taiwan WiMAX operator Global Mobile aims to increase the number of its subscribers by attracting 10% of mobile Internet-access users via any networks and any type of terminal devices, according to the company. Thanks to fast growing use of smartphones and tablet PCs, the number of mobile Internet-access users in Taiwan is expected to increase to 4.5 million by the end of 2011, market observers said. The rapid increase in mobile Internet traffic will create a heavy burden on operators of 3G, HSPA, HSPA+ networks, but this will bring business opportunities for WiMAX operators, the observers noted. Before Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) decides on adoption of 4G standard, including LTE and WiMAX 2, it is crucial for WiMAX operators to expand user bases to reach an economy of scale, the observers added.
